Robust, scalable GMLC and SMLC solutions

LocationWise from Creatitivy Software provides robust, scalable, and fault tolerant GMLC and SMLC solutions, capable of deployment in any network environment and interfacing to external LCS client applications. These solutions are known as "Network Based" or "Control Plane" positioning equipment and typically involve "push" transactions, in which an application locates a desired target, such as a subscriber and delivers the appropriate action.

In addition to Control Plane equipment, Creativity Software also provides "User Plane" or "Device Based", and Hybrid solutions for determining mobile location

General GSM Location Positioning Architecture

Gateway Mobile Location Centre (GMLC) and Mobile Positioning Center (MPC)

The Gateway Mobile Location Centre provides the ability to locate and deliver the geographic location information of mobile user equipment. Mobile equipment can include handsets for personal mobile location, or devices for tracking machines or vehicles.

Creativity Software’s GMLC solution supports the OMA MLP interface to external LCS clients, which allows it to respond to location requests. LCS clients can be provided from Creativity Software’s advanced range of location applications, or from third parties.

Serving Mobile Location Centre (SMLC) and Position Determination Entity (PDE)

The Serving Mobile Location Centre is responsible for calculating the geographic position of user equipment.

The SMLC achieves this by connectivity to the BSS, where information can be provided by the BSC. Creativity Software’s SMLC performs location calculations using Cell ID, Timing Advance and RxLEV measurements via the Lb interface to BSC. Cell ID calculations can be supported using information inherently available in almost any GSM or CDMA-based mobile network. Creativity Software’s SMLC can also be deployed as a PDE in CDMA-based networks.

User Plane Technologies

Creativity Software also offers User Plane positioning technology, alternatively known as "Device Based" rather than "Network Based". With User Plane solutions, a SIM-applet is installed directly on the handset, ensuring that the handset itself is actively involved in location determination.

The applet can be installed by the operator or manufacturer, or via OTA procedures. User Plane solutions can yield high accuracy, which benefits applications such as HomeZone Billing.

User plane solutions use "pull" techniques, activated when the subscriber invokes a location sensitive service. Normally, a scaled-down version of the GMLC / MPC is required to manage security and authentication requests. A more limited GMLC / MPC solution can also be provided by Creativity Software. Although positioning mainly takes place via pull transactions, push operations can also be supported by the reduced GMLC / MPC function.

Hybrid Technologies

Creativity Software can support hybrid solutions involving a combination of control plane location determination and Assisted GPS (A-GPS). Because GPS technology may not be reliable when a device is inside a building or in a high-density urban area, traditional location techniques can be used to complement this and ensure consistent and reliable determination of position.
